As with everything on the wiki, please make sure that you are familiar with the precedent, which in this case for items is set by the 5th edition corebooks, the Player's Handbook, (PHB) and Dungeon Master's Guide, (DMG). Explicit guidelines for creating a magical item are provided on 5e DMG pp. Naming Your Item Mundane Equipment.

I was looking at some of the items' prices in the DMG- specifically the +1 and +2 shield. Per the FG DMG. A +1 shield (Uncommon) is listed at 112gp and a +2 shield (Rare) is listed as 838gp. If my memory is correct, in the PHB or DMG it says that rare items have a minimum of 5000gp in value. Another issue is the Adamantine Plate Armor. It is listed as 807gp, and it is considered uncommon. The regular plate is listed as 1500gp in the PHB.
Where do these prices come from and should they be considered official since they are listed in the licensed content? Or, should these prices be fixed to align with the posted price ranged?
Then a WHOLE LOT of items of wildly varying usefulness are packed into 'Uncommon.' Like, the aforementioned cloak of elvenkind is just as common as Boots of Flying. But flying is WAY more useful/powerful than advantage when hiding.
RarityFirst, there aren't any boots of flying anymore. There are winged boots which give flight for 4 hours / day. So your example may be a bit off.Rarity

The magic item chapter is all over the place, as other posters have gotten into, and aren't internally consistent. An uncommon item costs 500gp to make regardless of whether its boots of elvenkind or winged boots. They also happen to be on the same treasure hoard table, so it's just as likely that an adventurer will find one as they will the other. I tried to use the hoard tables to get a sense of whether an item was too powerful to give my players, but mostly gave up and fell back on item rarity and the table in the DMG listing when a party might encounter an item of a particular rarity.

  • Most people will tell you that 5e frowns on selling magical items. A more common way to do it is to have a character find someone to enchant a specific item more than buy it off the shelf. That said, the DMG has a value guide based on item rarity on page 135.
  • Jun 22, 2012  No, I don’t use these prices for 5th edition, although you could. If you choose to use this list for 5th edition you need to remember that the largest magical enhancement in 5th edition is +3, which is functionally equivalent to a +5 in third edition. So a +3 weapon (for example) should be priced about the same as a +5 weapon listed here.
