Well, Kassadin has his Ultimate to escape sticky situations, or, he can teleport inside a teamfight to take out the enemy mages and squishies. Veigar, on the other hand, has an ultimate that uses the enemy's AP against them. Basically, he does a flat amount of damage, plus whatever AP he has (1:1 ratio) and the enemy's AP as well, so if an enemy has 400 AP, and you have 500, then his ultimate will deal: 500 base damage + 500 AP bonus + 400 AP Damage from the enemy = 1400 Magic Damage, minus whatever MRes the enemy has of course, but usually mages don't stack MRes.
However, Kassadin is slightly more versatile in that he can reduce the enemy's armor and silence enemy mages, as well as chase down and slow escaping champions.
In terms of squishyness, Veigar seems more fragile but Kassadin doesn't have much more survivability, unless you count the fact that he can escape faster. I played both and liked them, I bought Veigar and I really like his nuking ability against enemy casters.
So it's up to you to decide what you prefer.
