I just downloaded MicrosoftOffice2011.dmg as a part of my brand new Office365 subscription (yearly). Went to install it and it said 'invalid checksum' and won't install. How do I fix this? I am on a Macbook Pro with the latest OS.

DMG is used for disk image files on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X. This file extension replaces the older file extension IMG which was discontinued during the release of later series of Mac operating systems. You can open DMG file on Mac, Linux, and Windows operating systems but it will require additional software to be installed on Windows. Note that on Windows and Linux you cannot open every DMG file, since there are certain software limitations on DMG format variation.

DMG files are used by Apple for software distribution over the internet. These files provide features such as compression and password protection which are not common to other forms of software distribution file formats. DMG files are native to Mac OS X and are structured according to Universal Disk Image Format (UDIF) and the New Disk Image Format (NDIF). They can be accessed through the Mac OS Finder application by either launching the DMG file or mounting it as a drive.

DMG is also referred to as the Apple’s equivalent to MSI files in Windows PC. Non-Macintosh systems may access DMG files and extract or convert them to ISO image files for burning. Several applications are designed to offer this solution for Windows systems.

7-Zip and DMG Extractor are the best options to open DMG file on Windows because they are compatible with the most DMG variations. For Linux a built-in 'cdrecord' command can be issued to burn DMG files to CD's or DVD's.

Aside from the Finder application, you can open DMG files through Apple Disk Utility, Roxio Toast, and Dare to be Creative iArchiver for Mac platform. On the other hand, additional applications such Acute Systems TransMac, DMG2IMG, and DMG2ISO can be installed on Windows to fully support the files.

hehehe. thank goodness for this hint!!!!!! i've been wondering how to skip it automatically since panther did away with disk copy and its preference screen!

If you install important things from Disk Images--especially if you install system updates manually instead of with Software Update--I highly recommend *not* doing this.
I got burned pretty badly by skipping checksums when I installed the 10.2.8 update from what turned out to be a slightly corrupted disk image. The install completed, but it rendered my entire system non-bootable. Only the fact that I had a second bootable partition kept it from being a total nightmare.

Why would anyone ever want to do this? Checksums are there to protect you. It's a safety mechanism to, in this case, verify the integrity of a disc image before you go making any assumptions & maybe do something destructive. How long does the checksum take -- a few seconds at most? Come on, this isn't a hint, this is an invitation to pain. Don't do this hint -- sooner or later, you'll regret it.

Well, I keep one or two disk images of game CDs on my laptop so I don't need to carry the CDs around with me. When I want to play, I don't want to sit and wait while it checksums.

If the checksum only took a few seconds, I doubt anyone would ever wish to turn it off. However, for large images like CD images, this can take minutes to perform. The only way (previous to learning about this hint) to stop it was to click the 'Skip' button. It's precisely the length of time that causes people to want to turn it off.

oh quit your whining. suppose you regularly mount the same image over and over, it's a big waste of time! a couple of seconds? try a matter of minutes! it adds up, you could be using the data on the mounted disk, instead you're watching it verify something you know is working.
why don't you let people make up their own minds? who died and made you king that you feel you have to rain on everyone else's parade crying on a soapbox?! it's one thing to post a polite warning and another to condemn everyone who might not be as patient and lax as you.

You are not supposed to type the percent sign (%), only the text starting with the word defaults.

skip the % and u should be alright.

Thanks Daniel Steffen! That tip is awesome. I have a couple of small kids that are quite independent with their Macs and I wanted to upgrade one of their systems to OS X. The educational software developers seem to think it is a great idea to have children manipulating discs, despite all the complaints they get from parents and teachers. Anyway I have a bunch of CDROMs mirrored to the hard drive and they all mount on startup. This little tip has to save twenty minutes or more! (P.S., works for Tiger.)
