Devastating Damage in Close Combat

Shotguns are among the best choices for close range combat as its high damage per shot and area of effect simply makes it a formidable weapon up close.
Ineffective in Long Range
Shotguns become ineffective anything beyond mid range due to it dealing less damage when used in range. At mid-range, it is average at best.
Easily Connect Shots
All Shotguns fire multiple pellets at once, providing a large area of effect. This makes it easier to connect shots with enemies.
Slow Reload Time
Fully expended Shotguns take between 2.7 to 6.3 seconds to reload, but partial reload takes less time. This can easily turn battles for the worse as enemies may take this reload time to their advantage.

Weapon Tips
Get Up Close and Personal
Take advantage of Shotguns' full potential by engaging enemies in close quarters. Keep your aim on their upper body to get as many pellets as possible to connect with the target.
Jump Up and Shoot Down
Jump up to prevent enemies from hitting you and shoot down at them in response. You can also get headshots through this, boosting your damage outputs!
Utilize Weapon Combos
Use another weapon while at long range and chip away at an enemy's health and shields. Once you can rush in, swap to your shotgun to finish them off.

The Tactical Shotgun will continue to shoot as long as you keep your finger on the trigger. It does less damage, but it's faster fire rate kind of makes up for it.

Fortnite Battle Royale's Season 6 is set to end soon, but that doesn't mean Epic Games has slowed its efforts to provide players with plenty of fresh wares in the free-to-play multiplayer sandbox survival title's current season. As a matter of fact, the developer's latest patch for the game–Update 6.31, that is– has included the highly requested addition of Epic- and Legendary-tier Pump Shotguns.
According to Update 6.31's patch notes, Fortnite's new Epic and Legendary Pump Shotguns can be found practically anywhere on the map, as they are available from floor loot, chests, Supply Drops, and Vending Machines. What's more is that the Epic variety of the firearm has a maximum damage rate of 105, while the Legendary Pump Shotgun dishes out just a tad more pain with 110 maximum damage.
On top of the addition of Epic and Legendary Pump Shotguns, Epic Games has also decided to use Fortnite's Update 6.31 to tweak the attributes of all Pump Shotguns for the time being. To be specific, the Common varieties have a max damage of 80, Uncommons deal out a max damage of 85 to 95, and Rare Pump Shotguns have a max damage of 100. Not to mention, Pump Shotguns have been changed to deliver higher damage at shorter ranges, while targets farther away will receive less damage.
Furthermore, there have been even more changes brought to all Shotguns in Fortnite, for no matter what kind they are, the weapon type will now always apply at least 3 pellets worth of damage even if only 1 to 2 pellets hit the intended target. It's worth noting, however, that bonus pellets can never be critical hits.
Taking all of this into consideration, it looks as if Epic Games has put a lot of work into ensuring that Shotguns have been re-balanced so as to make sure that they operate similarly to how the weapons would in real life. Of course, verisimilitude has never really been Fortnite's strong suit, especially with it being a game that contains Rift teleportation.
