My main question is how the hell do people do well with this guy in bronze? I mean, I heard his early game is strong, and he does have tools to do well but he's really.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I really can't figure out why there are so many champions that deal both magic and physical damage, but for all the wrong reasons. I am mainly talking from a gearing perspective. Obviously if your champion is walking around swinging a big sword, he should deal physical damage, right? That isn't always the case.
I play Pantheon alot, and looking at his abilities, one might question 2 things. His W ability (Aegis of Zeonia) states:
Pantheon leaps at the target enemy champion and deals 50/75/100/125/150 (+1) magic damage and stuns them for 0.7/0.9/1.1/1.3/1.5 second(s).
I mean, really? You leap at someone, bashing them with your shield, stunning them.. and it deals magic damage.
Another issue is his R (Ultimate):
Pantheon gathers his strength and then leaps high into the air, crashing down at the target area a few seconds later. Deals up to 400/700/1000 (+1) magic damage to units at the center (down to 33% at the edge) and slows them by 35% for 1 second.
Ok, a guy is falling out of the sky, landing on you, but it deals magic damage? I don't get it.
So I ask, why does Riot do this to so many champions? Is it to make gearing a champion idiot-proof? Or, is it to let people think outside the box, and create interesting builds? Either way, I think it should be clear which type of champions are which, AD or AP, and all of their abilities should coincide with each other.
Another issue I have is the visual effect on certain abilities, and whether or not they deal physical or magic damage. My biggest issue is with Katarina. All of her abilities LOOK like physical, but they're not. Her ult, I mean, come on.. flying daggers everywhere..dealing magic damage?
And the last thing that bothers me, is that casters' auto attacks deal physical damage. Despite their magical looking animation, they deal physical damage. I think this really hurts mages. Most go through their burst rotation, and they have nothing left afterwards but auto attacks, with no AD to back it up.
TL;DR: I think all champions' abilities should be pure AD or pure AP, and not a mix of both. And the animation for their attacks should represent what kind it is.
