Do Poison Build Use Physical Dmg
The poison will deal 20% of the physical and chaos damage of the attack over 2 seconds. The poison dot will be increased by increased chaos damage, damage over time, and increased poison damage. An attack build that picks up the new hybrid phys/poison nodes will get 86% chaos + 100% poison + 46% poison gem (wild guess, could be lower or higher).

Guide notes |
March 3, 2018 -Updated Skill Trees to Patch 3.2 -Optimized Ascendancy Passives for Shadow class September 3, 2018 -Updated to Patch 3.4 December 19, 2018 -Updated for Patch 3.5 |
Poison is a very powerful status ailment, which scales very well with end-game gear. Certain items or abilities may cause hits with physical and chaos damage to apply poison, which is a negative status ailment that deals additional portion of that damage over a short duration. Poison can be applied multiple times, and each hit can apply a maximum of 1 stack of poison (but attacks can hit multiple times). With skills and items used in this build, the damage output of your character is greatly increased with each additional stack. This makes this type of poison builds reliant on high Physical/Chaos weapon damage and very high attack speed, to keep as many poison stacks active at a time. It also increases the overall damage output.
You can check our other Path of Exile builds at Odealo's Crafty Guides - Full List
1. Gameplay
This build is based on Assassin Ascendancy class, which is one of the few classes that affect Poison directly. As a Shadow, you get easy access to plenty of Claw and Attack Speed nodes which greatly benefits this build DPS. It is also a Dexterity-based class, which makes it easy to cap the 300 Dexterity requirement on the Dendrobate unique Body Armour. We have picked Spectral Throw as your main active Skill because of good AoE, and more importantly how it Hits enemies. The spectral copies of your weapons follow a 'boomerang' path, hitting enemies along the way, then stopping for a brief moment and returning to your character, hitting enemies again several times. Spectral Throw can apply multiple instances of poison with every attack because of:
- The 'boomerang' path that Spectral Projectiles follow
- 100% Spectral Throw's Projectiles Pierce Chance
- Lycosidae shield that makes your Attacks unevadable (you may also try to increase Accuracy Rating to as close to 95% as possible if you can't afford Lycosidae)
- 100% chance to apply Poison on Hit (Wasp Nest, Passive Nodes, and Lesser Poison on Dendrobate sum up to exactly 100% Chance to Poison on Hit)
- Good AoE coverage with Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Gem

3. Leveling tips
Leveling with Poison is quite easy. You pick up a lot of Chaos Damage nodes in your Skill Tree, which makes it a natural choice to level up with Poison/Chaos active skills. It is recommended to use Viper Strike for applying Poison and as single target DPS. We also suggest using Blight to help out with AoE and clear bigger packs.
Suggested leveling Gem setups:
Viper Strike setup | |
Viper Strike - melee attack that applies poison on hit
Melee Physical Damage Support - good DPS buff

5. Gear Setup
Poison Spectral Throw can be played with at least several Weapon choices, but we recommended using Claws, as they provide high Attack Speed (which makes it easier to stack more Poison). Also, Wasp Nest gains a terrific DPS buff when attacking monsters that have 5 or more stacks of Poison applied. It also comes at a meager price. This build can also be fairly powerful with a low budget, however, it scales extremely well with endgame gear, so this is what we have decided to cover in this guide. With the recommended unique items, it's crucial for the Amulet and Rings to provide high Life, Elemental Resistances, and required Attributes.

Updated for Patch 3.5
The Best Crafty Guides by Odealo
Estimated budget: high
Guide notes |
May 2, 2018 -Build created December 16, 2018 -Updated for Patch 3.5 -Overall DPS of this build has been reduced by nearly 40% in Patch 3.5. It still is a decent build, but DPS-wise, it would perform better with Lioneye's Glare for example. As it changes the concept of this build entirely, it will not be included in here |
This Quill Rain Poison Assassin is a very strong build, which can reach over one million DPS. Poison can stack multiple times from each hit out of the nearly 100 arrows you can shoot every second. On top of that, thanks to Assassin Ascendancy class, every stack of Poison applied to enemies increases the Poisons' duration by 5%. Combining it with Vile Toxins Support Gem allows scaling the Poison damage to extreme height, allowing this build to clear all the Path of Exile's content.
You can also check our other Path of Exile builds right over here Odealo's Crafty Guides - Full List
1. Gameplay
This Poison Assassin build is based on applying hundreds of Poison stacks on your target. The Poison damage is multiplied to the extent where everything dies within seconds. This is accomplished by utilizing the Quill Rain's insane Attack Speed bonus, and very high number of projectiles shoot by Barrage and Tornado Shot skills. While Tornado Shot shoots significantly more arrows, they are spread out. When fighting Bosses, it's the Barrage attack skill that will have more arrows hit your target every second. Regarding defenses, this build is Life-based, with high Evasion and Dodge Chance. On top of that, it's advised to use the Arctic Armour Aura for additional Physical Damage mitigation.

Leveling with a Ranged/Poison is very easy. You can shoot arrows from range, avoiding unnecessary danger, and applying powerful Poison which will finish off the monsters.
