My HAMLET ext. hard drive no longer is showing on my desktop. I've not used it for a few years, but now need
something important of it and it doesn't show up on either macs i have (both using 10.4.11 OS) or a PC with windows 7.
The light comes on on the device, and I tried it in an ext USB port hub and also the slots on both macs. THe light on
the hub flashes as if it's reading it, the box hums along as it's it's being read, but nothing.
I looked up the specs online for the XX and it says no driver is needed.

How to install el capitan from a dmg file mac. Mar 03, 2018  Bootable USB Installers for OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and Sierra. First, review this introductory article: Create a bootable installer for macOS. Second, see this How To outline for creating a bootable El Capitan installer. Simply replace the Terminal command with the one from the preceding article by copying it into the Terminal window.

USB powered, no power adapter required
that could be the problem. None of your computers are producing enough power at the USB ports to turn over the drive.
As electric motors (like the one that spins your hard drive platter) age, they can demand more power and eventually exceed what the ports can provide.
There are ways around this---these are cheap:
1) Get a powered USB hub (has it own, separate power brick). That will usually solve the problem.
2) Get a 'Y' USB cable ( http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/ ) . Attaches to two USB ports on the computer to get more power to the drive.

  • Hi
This is big and what is APPLE doing to solve this issue??
I just copy some posts from the forum to show how big this issue is, there is 8 more pages with the same problem, and i am one of them!!!!
HELP!!!! WE ARE FREAKING OUT HERE AND NEED A SOLUTION!!!
Yes, me. I have an HP w2207 who worked with my 3 y.o. old MacBook (OS 10.4.??) via the DVI-port flawlessly. Then bought a brandnew MacBook Pro with 10.6.X and the external monitor stopped being recognized. It works now that I have changed the connection to the VGA-port of the monitor (and bought yet another adapter for the MacBook Pro) but the quality is not what I'm used to.

Yes. I've tried 7 different Macs including a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and my external monitor doesn't work with it either.
    For me here's a recap:
Installed SL on a Mac Pro connected to a 23' Cinema via DVI and Olevia 537 via HDMI Input #1 and now that input no longer works with Mac computers.
Reinstalled 10.5.8 on the Mac Pro and HDMI #1 still didn't work, so I plugged the Mac into HDMI #2 and it worked.
Reinstalled SL on the Mac Pro connected to a 23' Cinema via DVI and Olevia 537 via HDMI Input #2 and now that input no longer works with Mac computers.
Since then, every device (PCs, DVD Players, Video Cameras, etc..) I connect to either of the HDMI inputs work fine. However, neither HDMI input works with ANY of the 7 different Macs (regardless of OS version) I've tried, except for a 10-year-old G4 running Panther or Tiger.
The monitor had previously worked with the MacPro (HDMI input #1) and a G5 (HDMI input #2) for almost 2 years.
When I plug the MacPro into any other monitor via HDMI, it works fine. Same thing with the G5.
My theory is still that the installer for Snow Leopard somehow made my monitor's HDMI inputs incompatible with Macs. I'm so frustrated that I'm ready to buy a new monitor, but since there's no guarantee that a new monitor won't be adversely affected by Snow Leopard, I'm still dubious.

    Another 'me too' post..
Not sure exactly when it stopped working (since I don't use it every day) but my Viewsonic VX2455wm stopped working with my MacBook recently too. Checked with another MacBook (six months newer than my Late 2006 model) and that exhibited the same problem. Both machines have fully patched Snow Leopard installs. Both started with Tiger. Mine is regularly connected to the external monitor, the other has never been connected. I'm connecting using a DVI cable and a mini-DVI-DVI adapter.
The monitor appears to work correctly. I've checked with a Windows laptop connected on the VGA port. I want to test with another DVI-enabled machine to see whether or not its the cable.

    Hi Guys
I have the same problem with my new Dell 2209WAf. It worked fine before i changed from L to SL.
I didn't know what happened so i have spend hours and hours to resolve the problem.
Hours with Mac support and friends didn't change anything, i still cant make my Dell to work, or show up in preferences. I am working as a photographer and this issue is a real problem.
I just heard from Mac Support that Apple is working on it...well, doesn't help us with the problem today.
So Apple, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS! NOW! this problem should NEVER showed up, this is something you should have fixed before telling all the Macers to upgrade!!!

Experiencing the same issues. However, on bit different hardware.
I'm using the XLR8 ProView USB input devices. Using these devices on a mixture of 10.5.8 and 10.6.2 systems (2 MacBooks, 2 Mac Mini and 1 iMac).
    I can confirm the following:
When attempting to mirror video, or extend the desktop, using a mini-DVI to S-Video/Composite device on OSX 10.6.2 no video is sent to the mini-DVI device (inputing into the XLR8).
When attempting to mirror video, or extend the desktop, using a mini-DVI to S-Video/Composite device on OSX 10.5.8 video is sent to the mini-DVI device (inputing into the XLR8).
Let me also state, that the mini-DVI port on the Mac Mini's do work. They have been connected to 19' monitors and working without issue. Today, the mini-DVI devices were replaced with minidisplay port devices, which are use in conjunction with the mini-DVI ports.
It would appear, in my case, that the problem is that the mini-DVI port on both the MacBook and Mac Mini, running 10.6.2, as a secondary display device is not operating properly.

Same problems here. I reloaded OS 10.4.6 which is what shipped with my MBP1,2 17' 2.16 Intel Core Duo 2GB ram and after installing that, i was able to select 1920x1080 for my external HP w2338h, DVI-VGA, never been able to connect DVI-HDMI. On SL, the max rez I was able to 'use' was 1600x1200 which looked horrible. So this leads me to suspect that this must be an issue with SL.
I spoke with Apple Tech support on Sat and was no help. The only suggestion was that I take my MBP and Monitor to the Apple Store. Those of you who are fortunate enough to live in Chicago in the winter, then you know that option really isn't that feasible, it is but just a giant pain.

I have an iMac 9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo that I bought last June. It came with Leopard, but I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Currently, it's running 10.6.2. My HP w2207 Widescreen monitor works perfectly with it using the DVI port on the HP and the mini-display (not mini-DVI) port on the iMac.
However, I just bought the top-of-the-line iMac 11,1 Intel Core i5 QuadCore three days ago and it crashes nearly every time that it wakes from 'sleep' when the HP w2207 is connected to it. It doesn't even recognize that the w2207 is connected to it. Additionally, when the w2207 is connected, it (a) looks terrible - very dim and very granular, and (b) causes the iMac QuadCore to operate very sluggishly. When I disconnect the HP w2207, the iMac QuadCore is lightning-fast.
Much like my older iMac, the QuadCore is running 10.6.2 and I'm using the mini-display port.

Another me too post. I have a new 17' MacBook Pro with 10.6.2 installed. Trying to connect to an HPL2245wg - sometimes it works flawlessly - other times not at all. Some mornings I spend 30 -40 minutes rebooting, unplugging and plugging the monitor, Detecting Displays, changing the Graphics Card (Energy settings) - all to no avail. Very, very frustrating Apple - please figure out what is going on with this issue..and get it fixed!

I seem to have found a fix for myself. I was having terrible issues with the screen blinking and flickering constantly. I tried to reset the SMC with everything unplugged and the computer would not reboot at that point on it's own which led me eventually to reinstalling SL.
Reinstalling SL is quite painless actually as it installs on top of your profile. After reinstalling I ran software update which installs the cumulative upgrades. Now I usually don't have any problems but must follow the instructions to run in clamshell mode to the letter.
After a week of running in clamshell mode I started having an issue with the dock not lining up so I put the computer to sleep, disconnected the monitor and restarted with nothing connected. After that, followed the clamshell mode instructions again and have been working fine again all week.
I've also disabled my screen-saver, and deleted the windowserver preferences as part of my debug process but not sure if that has contributed to my new found stability.

Me too. I have a MacBook Pro 2,2 running the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.2. After I have installed yesterday's security patch it does not recognize external displays on the DVI port any longer. Tried it with a 23' DELL at the office and a 23' Samsung at home. Both have worked without any problems for years.
I am curious to learn how this behavior is related to security..

  • I'm wondering if there is any way I can save my music. I had to reformat my macbook due to corruption of whole disk encryption. My only copy of my music library was on the iPod itself. I was able to restore about 2/3 of my collection from the iPod to the mac. However, at one point the computer became nonresponsive while the iPod was mounted. Had to force a reboot. The iPod was not recognized after that. I connect it to my mac, it says 'connected', but iTunes doesnt recognize this, and it doesnt appear on the desktop.
It works fine. All the music and movies, etc., are there, as well as other data I stored on it (which I also want to get back) (judging from free space indicator), but I can't mount it.
    I've done everything traditionally recommended.
    -Five Rs, numerous times
-Tried with different macs, 10.5.8, 10.6.1, different cables
    -Started iPod in disk mode
-Ran all the diagnostics, they're all fine
    -Played with iTunes helper
    -Reinstalled iTunes
-Tried on completely different macintosh, same problem
For some reason this thing really doesnt want to mount, but when I use the iPod it's clear all the data is right there on it.
Will I have to bust open the iPod and take out the hard drive, and mount it in another enclosure to get my data back? That's the only thing I can think of at this point. Any other ideas?
    Thanks-

  • So a freind of mine asked me to fix his iPod shuffle. He tried to fix it himself by plugging it into his Windoze PC and formatting it like a hard drive. I explained to him that it probably wasn't a great idea but at any rate, here we are.
I have access to a Mac Mini, and a PC both with the latest version of iTunes and the iPod Updater.
When I plug the iPod shuffle into either the Mac or the PC, it does not show up at all. It does show up in the Device manager of Windows as a Disk Drive but it's not accessible. It proceeds to peg the CPU at 100% and thoroughly bog down the PC. When I plug it into the Mac Mini, and run the iPod Updater, it tells me to 'Plug in an iPod to update it.' Problem is, the iPod is plugged in. This happens both on Windows and PC when I run the iPod updater.
Does anybody have any idea on what I should do to fix the iPod? I must admit, I've only had the Mac Mini for 1 day and my previous experience with the Mac OS was OS 8.6 on a 6400 so be nice :P.
    Thanks in advance,

  • My 3rd generation ipod touch is not recognized on iTunes but is recognized when I plug it into a different computer. I've tried reinstalling iTunes numerous times and have referred to other online tutorials. With no success, my iPod will still not show up on my Macbook, and I've never experienced a problem like this before with either device. My mac and itunes still recognize my iPhone so I don't know why they would recognize one device but no the other. Solutions?
Any feedback will help greatly. Thanks.

It should work fine. I have a 1st gen shuffle, and it still works..
If you are updating to iTunes 11.x for the first time, iTunes may hide the sidebar initially, which is where the shuffle appears.
If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. In the sidebar, the shuffle should appear under DEVICES.

  • iPod Shuffle 2nd generation not appearing in Mac Book Pro device window. USB checked and OK as I can charge iPod by connecting to power outlet. Reset iPod and no change. Kindly advise on what to do next.

    Hi SultanAshraf,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue with your iPod shuffle being recognized by iTunes on your Mac. Try the suggestions in the in the troubleshooting assistant below, they will resolve most issues like the one you described.

  • I've been through two 4gen shuffles within a week. Connected them to my NEW MacBook Pro, with up-to-date iTunes. Say's they're currupted. Restore won't work. Tried the connection on another Mac, same thing.
Just for the heck of it, I connected it to my work 'Windows' machine and iTune for Window's recognizes it just fine. What's wrong?
This shuffle should just work on my Mac with no issues! Not happy, not happy at all.

After a trip to the Apple and over two hours with three different Apple speciaists, not luck in resolving this issue. The 4th Gen shuffle is not recognized. The Apple Store confirms that the Shuffle is fine and works on their Macs in the store.
    Steps taken so far..
Removed iTunes and re-installed twice, did not resolve the issue.
    Removed Symantec Norton Security Suite.
Performed an Archive Install of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard
Ran various disk utilities, still than same. The Apple Disk utilitiy continuely shows errors on the shuffle.
Tried the shuffle on my wifes new 27' iMac, the same thing happens on her Mac.
Multiple restores through iTunes, no luck.

  • Much like the problem with the Sony GPS-CS1, it appears the ATP Photo Finder device also will not be recognized as a flash drive on a Mac. Tiger worked with the Sony for awhile, but recent updates (as well as Leopard 10.5.x) have made it no longer work. There are other topics on the GPS-CS1 in these forums detailing those problems.
I picked up an ATP Photo Finder from My Discount Digital to try it out. It logs data, then you insert the memory card in to the device and it will GPS stamp the JPGs. It sounds like a great idea, but when it didn't work I was going to have to plug it up to my Mac and use PC software via Parallels to reprocess the images.
It is not recognized -- and under Parallels, a new USB device shows up simply listed as 'U' under the pull-down menu. When I try to select it, it claims it is already in use. Methinks Apple Mac OS X is semi-grabbing the device but not being able to use it.
    Odd.
So I post this in case others have the ATP Photo Finder and have problems.. Maybe we can figure something out.

Well, here's an odd (and quick) self follow-up.. I was reading an Apple Help file and it suggested looking at the System Profiler to see if the device is being recognized. Indeed, it showed the 'U' and some garbled characters (so something is not quite right). It also showed it was plugged in through my powered USB hub. I bought this hub after running in to issues with devices that would not work plugged in to the iMac keyboard.. On a whim, I plugged the ATP Photo Finder in to the non-powered USB port on the keyboard and .. it worked. It still shows up as U(garbled) but I was able to access it from the Mac Finder.
    Interesting.

  • Hi folks,
I have an issue similar to several threads that were active during 2007 and 2008, but the information and answers given then do not solve my problem.
The original 80 GB Hitachi drive in a 1.5 Mhz PPC failed. I replaced it with a Western Digital PATA 320 GB ide drive and reassembled the Mac Mini.
The original Apple OS X was put in the optical drive and the computer was started with the 'c' button pressed when powered on, but repeatedly the disk was ejected after a short time. Since the mac mini does not boot from the proper install cd, I cannot use disk utilities to partition and format the WD drive per the other thread messages.
The WD drive is not formatted for Apple yet. I connected the headless mac mini to an older ibook with a firewire cord and I attempted to boot the mac mini in target disk mode. The ibook never mounted the mac mini as an external drive, an icon did not appear on the desktop, and running disk utilities on the ibook did not recognize the mac mini connected by firewire as a mounted drive. I mounted an Acom hard drive connected by fire wire as a test of the ports and wires and that device was recognized in disk utilities and an icon for it was seen on the desktop.
Back to the issue at hand. What else can I do to partition and format a new hard drive installed in an older mac mini where 1) the install disk is kicked out of the optical drive and 2) the unformatted drive cannot be accessed via target disk mode from an ibook?
Is 320 GB incompatible with a PPC mac Mini?
Thanks in advance for offers of help and correct answers.
    Mich

    Hi Mich,
the older PPC computers are usualy limited to 128Gb max. HD size.
    You need something like this:

    Its available for $25 here:

  • I cannot get my Mac to recognize a new ipod w/color display, which has previously only been formatted to a PC.
I used to have my ipod w/color display linked to my Mac, but, then it was stolen. My friend, who had the same exact ipod, gave me hers, which is the one I am now attempting to use on my Mac. She had it linked to an out-of-date version of itunes on her PC. I am aware this could be the issue.
However, on top of this, the new ipod has some battery issues. I have not been able to get my computer or charger to recognize it; when I plug it in to either it does nothing. It only works when attached to ihome or a car charger. I took the ipod to my local Genius Bar, who was able to get it to come to life when attached to their Mac. Ultimately, they restored it but told me that the battery was corrupted (they said that it was fully charged but the battery was still reading itself as dead, thus not turning on).
Why can I not get my Mac to recognize it? If I have it connected to my Mac, shouldn't it come to life when I plug it in? If I can't get it to come to life, how can I update it? Will a new battery fix any of this???
