We recommend building the Setapp for Teams distribution package as DMG, not PKG. With DMG, during the distribution process, the Setapp config file is placed in the corresponding user's directory and a separate folder with the Admin's name is not created for the config file. (FEU)' and make sure the 'Fill user templates (FUT)' option is not. PFConfig 1.0.296 can be downloaded from our website for free. This program was originally created by Portforward.com. The program can also be called 'PFConfig Support Tool', 'PFConfig Support', 'PFConfig Helper'. The following version: 1.0 is the most frequently downloaded one by the program users.

This page provides extra detail for the steps outlined on our Packaging Software for Deployment guide.
Snapshots
- While most of the time a 'Normal' snapshot is fine for packaging software installs, if you wish to capture the modification of existing preferences, use 'New and Modified' snapshot instead.
- Review all the files captured and remove any that are not necessary, or that are unique to your personal installation.
- Note that there is a list of files always excluded (in Composer Preferences).
DMG versus PKG
The differences between saving an installer package as DMG or PKG can be summarized by noting these key differences:
DMG | PKG |
hierarchical filesystem, retains permissions | not |
not | includes installer logic |
required for user files | not |
can use block mode for fast copying | cannot |
cannot | can contain a signature |
A PKG is either a flat file container or a bundle including folders.
User Settings
- If you need to capture user settings (files in /Users), you need to build as a DMG.
- To deploy the settings from the package (via a Policy), you must check the boxes in the Casper Admin package definition for Fill Existing Users and/or Fill User Templates.
- With a package using FEU (Fill Existing Users), Casper grabs the files in the build computer's respective Users path and deposits them in the same path on the computers that receive the packaged software. You must separately remove them if that user does not exist on the receiving computer. See this JAMF discussion on FEU and FUT.
- FEU does not work with non-local accounts in a directory (for example, an AD account is used for login).
Package Indexing
- Once created, a package can be indexed via Casper Admin.
- If you wish to enable Uninstall, you must index first.
- To use Self Healing, you must index.
Managing Packages with Casper
Your packages are created with Composer, but you manage them with Casper Admin or the JSS web interface. You add the package by drag and dropping it on the Casper Admin window which copies it to the distribution point and adds to JSS. Once added to JSS, it is recommended you make the following changes to the package. Except for noting the JSS ID number, these changes can all be made from either Casper Admin or the JSS web interface.
In the General Panel
- Set the Category.
- Enter text in the Info box to describe for the user in a few words what the software is and the version.
- Enter Notes to indicate some about how it was created, when, and by whom.
In the Options Panel
- Change the Priority. If package is OS use 1; if a required OS addition 5; if a patch to other software, make the number greater than corresponding software in JSS.
- If you built as DMG and need to Fill Existing Users (see above), check that box. Likewise for Fill User Templates.
- If you wish to use this package for image builds, check This package must be installed to the boot volume at imaging time.
- If you indexed and expect to create an uninstall policy, check Allow this package to be uninstalled by Casper or a Policy.

Note • Because Casper only supports Mac OS X desktop packages, the Casper Deployment Data subtab is only displayed for .pkg files, .dmg files, and links to Apple Mac App Store apps.
When a Mac OS X desktop package is imported into the Application Catalog, Application Manager mines package elements for Casper-specific deployment data. You can view and modify deployment data for Mac OS X desktop packages and add new data by editing the properties on the subtabs of the Casper Deployment Data tab. AdminStudio displays Casper deployment data in a multi-tabbed, organized format that is easy to navigate through and to update.
Casper Deployment Data
The Casper Deployment Data subtab of the Catalog Deployment Type View can include up to three subtabs that display Casper deployment data: General, Options, and Limitations. The Options and Limitations subtabs are not displayed for Mac App Store apps.

General Tab
The General tab of the Casper Deployment Data tab is displayed for all Mac OS X desktop applications.
Casper Deployment Data / General Tab
The General subtab of the Casper Deployment Data tab includes the following properties.
Property | Description |
Server Name | Name of the Casper server. |
Category | Category in Casper that the package will be added to. Note • Casper lets you create custom categories. If AdminStudio has matched this application to an entry in the Application Recognition Library (ARL), AdminStudio will use the ARL category when publishing to Casper, creating it if necessary. |
Info | Information to display to the administrator when the package is deployed or uninstalled |
Notes | Notes to display about the package (such as the name of the person who built it and when it was built). Note • Not displayed for Mac App Store Apps. |
Free | Indicates whether or not the Mac App Store app is available for free (True) or whether it requires payment (False). Note • Only displayed for Mac App Store Apps. |
Options Tab
The Options tab of the Casper Deployment Data tab is only displayed for PKG and DMG packages.
Casper Deployment Data / Options Tab
The Options subtab of the Casper Deployment Data tab includes the following properties.
Property | Description |
Priority | Priority to use for deploying or uninstalling the package. For example, a package with a priority of 1 is deployed or uninstalled before other packages. When several applications are deployed together, the one with the highest priority is installed first. Therefore, if one application requires that another application be installed first before it can be successfully installed, you should assign the required application a higher priority (lower number) than the dependent application. |
Fill user templates (FUT) | Set this property to True to fill new home directories with the contents of the home directory in the package's Users folder. This setting can be changed when deploying or uninstalling the package using a policy.l Note • Only applicable to DMG packages. |
Fill existing user home directories (FEU) | Set this property to True to fill existing home directories with the contents of the home directory in the package's Users folder. After you download a program do you need dmg. That is essentially all you need to know when it comes to extracting the contents of DMG files to your Windows PC. If you do not want to download these programs, one other option is to follow our guide on how to convert DMG files to ISO’s. After that conversion is done, you can mount the ISO in Windows and access the files that way. Jun 28, 2015 If you don't need them, you can delete installer files. If you plan on reinstalling OS X from scratch (or should you need to uninstall and reinstall a specific application), having installers in a folder on an external hard drive can come in han. Dec 27, 2006 I'm new to the world of Macs, and I was just wondering after I download something from the Internet, do I need to keep the.dmg file that is on my desktop? Specifically, I downloaded Senuti, so do I need to keep that.dmg file on my desktop in order for the application to work? Thank you for any advice you can offer. Jan 02, 2009 After installing a program or application on Mac, do you need to keep the original dmg file, or can you just delete it? On a game it usually functions as cd, so I keep those files. But after installing a program like Google Earth and putting the needed file in Applications, do I need to keep the original dmg file used to install it to make it work, or can I just delete it? This setting can be changed when deploying or uninstalling the package using a policy Note • Only applicable to DMG packages. |
Requires restart | Set this property to True to require that computers must be restarted after installing the package. |
Install on boot drive after imaging | Set this property to True to ensure that the package is installed on the boot drive after imaging. Note • This setting is only used when deploying a package with an OS image, like with an OSD. It does not affect day-to-day package delivery. |
Limitations Tab
The Limitations tab of the Casper Deployment Data tab is only displayed for PKG and DMG packages.
